[4/17/02] Nerf Chop

Clop. Clink. Clop. Clink. Following the blue tinted alien’s orders, the peg-legged droid makes it’s way toward the ship’s maintenance interface to see if it can make some sense of the variety of malfunctions.

Jarren glances at the softly humming force field where the port laser turret used to be. Looking through the blue field at the sandy terrain outside spurs him into action. There seems to be two ways out of the ship; the man-sized crew door on the right side up near the cockpit, and the cargo ramp to the rear. Not wanting to let all the conditioned air out of the ship, Jarren intelligently chooses the blast door to the side.

The group’s ears pop as Jarren taps the keypad to open the crew door. With a faint woosh, the door slides upward at a startling speed. A blast of inferno-like air, fueled by the planet’s two suns which are now distinctly separate in the palest blue sky overhead, greets Jarren as he pokes his head out for a look. With that first hot, dry breath searing the air in his lungs, Tatooine promises only this: a life of indeterminate length, characterized by miserable heat and the dreariest of landscapes.

After closing the blast door, Jarren’s makeshift poncho flaps in the breeze as he climbs down the ladder onto the sandy, baked earth. It’s a curious sensation to know you are sweating, yet have the moisture robbed by the planet before it has a chance to cool you down. Surveying the landscape wearing his ridiculous homemade poncho, Jarren’s eyes narrow and he kicks the ground in protest. How could fate do this to him? How could it leave him stranded on this awful planet next to this flying trash heap (well, not flying anywhere at the moment), accompanied by a lunatic with a god complex and a human with a chip on his shoulder and a bad hairdo? Turning to his task of evaluating the damage to the ship, all he can do is shake his head, kick the ground again, and wonder if his fortunes will improve.

Having decided to head for the settlement, the two humans inside the ship prepare for their trek. Searching the ship hasn’t yielded much in the way of a hat for Dex, although he did find a loose towel he’s been contemplating making a turban out of. He stands in the center of the cargo bay holding on to the ends of the towel, which he has slung around his neck. Dex scowls at the half-hidden monkey-lizard, as Ian stands up and approaches him, slapping Dex on the shoulder as he rambles on about the history of vice and ruling the universe.

Sweltering in the barely tolerable heat, Jarren finally has a chance to see what damage the TIE fighters have inflicted on the outside of the “Nerf Chop”, as he discovers the ship has been christened via painting on the side. The sensor array is completely mangled. That will obviously need replacement, he thinks to himself. The turret dome will need replacement as well since it’s actually been ripped off of the ship, leaving alternately jagged and melted edges where it was once attached.

After circling around behind the ship to get a look at the engines, Jarren hits the side of the ship in exasperation. The engine cowling has must have been come loose entering the atmosphere because it has fallen partially into the engines’ thrust stream and been mostly melted down by the heat. That would certainly account for the popping sounds the engines were making. The melted cowling will have to be cut off at a minimum to get the ship able to limp into port somewhere, but will have to be replaced before the ship will be spaceworthy. That should be a fun task in this heat, he thinks.

Several icicles have formed from two or three small holes in the hull on the pilot’s side. As he gets closer, he can hear the rush of gasses coming out of the holes. And that, he thinks, would explain the trouble with life support. He leans down and puts his pale face in the refreshing stream of cold gasses coming from the hole, providing a modicum of relief from the intense heat. He thinks he’ll need some tools to see the extent of this damage. The ship will unquestionably need a recharge of its liquid gas supply, however.

With his cursory inspection complete, Jarren heads back to the ladder and climbs up to the crew door. All in all, it could have been worse he thinks to himself … much worse.

At the same time as Jarren is coming up, Dex and Ian (who is somehow managing to remain conscious and upright) are heading out, finally getting a taste of the infernal heat. Out of courtesy, Jarren steps back down off of the ladder he’d been climbing to let the two humans climb down. When they make it and have had a moment to look around, he relays his findings about the status of the ship, pointing out the maladies visible from their location. Jarren tells them that he’s going up to check with the droid and compare their findings and reprogram the ships access codes if he can. Jarren then scrambles up the ladder back into the ship, anxious to get out of the inhospitable environment that is Tatooine.

[OOC: Some housekeeping items I need to mention: There were no holsters for the blasters. The only power cells for the blasters and ion gun are in the guns - they are fully charged (20 shots worth). Navigation computers give coordinates for the ship even in the absence of sensors. That's all I can think of at the moment

I've added a picture of the Omwati race next to Jarren's character sheet link. I have more pictures of things scanned in that will show up when/if you encounter them as well.]
