[9/18/02] Interlude: Part 1

The Force is a subtle thing. It works in ways that those that would master it would not expect. Jarren's unconscious use of the Force in the farming supply store is a good example of this. In the store the Force flowed through Jarren, who could be considered wise in some ways and reckless in others. Even nearly skilless in the Force, he felt it. Then again, so did the Twi'lek Neera, and by that the Force did as it was bid, binding her thread to that of Jarren's, ever so subtly.

Neera wakes in her room, refreshed after some tiredness which always accompanies active use of the Force. The days events have been something of a revelation to her after her relatively uneventful time on Tatooine. Another Force user, here in the defunct mining town of Mos Taike in the obscurity of the Tatoo system. "Coincidence?", she wonders. Her training has taught her otherwise. She ponders the meeting with the trio, scheduled an hour before 2nd twilight, her many questions still swirling in her mind, and wonders if the will of the Force will be revealed.

Blind faith in the Force alone is foolhardy, however, as she well knows; so she collects herself and her belongings, deciding to pay a visit to the bartender across the street. After his talk with the human and his special position in the town, she figures he'll be able to fill in some of the blanks that her mind has had trouble with. Not to mention, she's feeling somewhat hungry after her meditation and nap.

With that, she gathers her belongings, giving special care to her lightsaber in her cargo pocket, casually tosses her lekku, or head-tails, behind her shoulders, and steps into the hallway, her room door closing behind her with a hiss. Downstairs in the misty commons, Mart'tak gives her a nod as she passes by. She flashes him a warm smile before passing through the airlock and out into the heat.

As usual, there's not a lot of street traffic during the hot hours of the day, but a few hearty souls are making their way between the few buildings that compose the core of the town. Chaley, a human female in the light-tan garb popular on the planet, calls a polite greeting to Neera as she crosses the dusty road toward the Oasis. Neera grins and waves back good-naturedly.

After squeezing through the door into the cantina, the Twi'lek scopes out the place to see how difficult it is going to be to be inconspicuous when she questions Leem, who stands up straight quickly as she enters.

"Hi Neera," he coos while trying to look as though he was busy. Dersh, the ever-present thug, only glances up momentarily as if to assess the threat before returning his attention to his fingernails, satisfied that there is no threat. Neera smiles inwardly, pleased that she has done well to blend in as an ordinary citizen.

As she heads to a booth, she notes that there are only two Humans off in a corner booth and that they are engrossed discussing some moisture farming minutae. "Leem, can I speak with you for a moment?" she asks innocently over her shoulder.

As he scrambles out from behind the bar, obviously eager to entertain her every wish, Neera makes a mental note that Leem was watching her move. "Perhaps with this one, I won't even need the Force", she thinks sarcastically. She sits down on the bench seat and motions the Rodian to join her which he does after a moment's hesitation. Drawing on the Force, she faces Leem and gracefully moves her hand through the air, just at the Rodian’s eye-level and asks what he knows about the two humans she met earlier that day in the bar. She feels the Force flow through her as the telepathic suggestion takes seed in the alien's mind

"How about we talk about a trip to Mos Eisley together instead?" He touches her leg under the table.

Neera scowls and removes his suction cups from her leg.

"Ok, Ok. You mean the three that arrived yesterday, right? They have a ship out at Coozer's that looks pretty banged up. There's two humans and another one that looks near-human but is blue; I'm not sure where he's from. After their business proposal today, I'd guess that they're smugglers at best, pirates at worst. That ship isn't much, so I'd say smugglers. Have I told you how beautiful you are today?" He puckers his snout in the form of a smile.

"Yes. Now, why were they here earlier talking with you? " urges Neera.

He rubs his head thoughtfully before continuing. "They, uh, have a shipment of goods they'd like to sell to my brother, Joko."

"What kind of goods?" asks the sage-green Twi'lek.

Normally, Leem would balk at this point, but the implanted suggestion overrides his better judgement and he spills what he knows as if it was casual conversation, telling Neera all about the holographic discs that the Human Dex provided a sample of. He also offers to show Neera in the back room if she'd like to see it. Neera, however, pulls the hunger card, asking him if he'd have the cook make her her usual dish. With a shake of his antennae, Leem seems to come out of his altered state but still rushes off to comply, unaware that the information he just passed was confidential.

Once her dinner arrives, she spends her time eating and mulling over the information that Leem gave her, fitting the pieces together with those she already knew. She also passes the time studiously ignoring Leem who has spent the better part of her time there with his elbows on the bar, holding up his head as he gazes not so subtly at her across the room. Soon enough, she finishes her meal, gives her thanks, and returns to her room.

As the hour before 2nd Twilight approaches, Neera leaves Talley’s and with resolve, she starts walking towards Coozer’s. While she walks, she plays out several scenarios of the meeting in her mind, among these the possibility of a trap. "Is the promise of what I might find worth the risk involved?" she asks herself. Staring now at the door to the spaceport, she knows that there is only one way to find out.

[OOC: Amy, subtract 4 VP temporarily for your use of the Force. Leem didn't save…obviously]
